Here: Crickets“Immersing myself in this tradition, I learned the symbolism of flowers in Chinese traditional painting to compose my still lifes and I walked through the streets of Shanghai — as amateurs traditionally do — with a singing cricket in my pocket.” With the series around singing and fighting crickets in China, Laurence Kubski explores a tradition with documentary engagement and renders the intimate ties between animal, culture and human psyche with fascinating images that veer between reality and abstraction.
There: Composing picturesKubski’s practice has established itself at the crossroads of photography, graphic design and art direction. Although starting out as a graphic designer, she has quickly been acknowledged in the field of photography, receiving the Swiss Young Talent Award for Photography in 2017 and the P×3 Prix de la Photographie in Paris in 2018. The photographs were shown at the Copenhagen Photo Festival in 2018 and in the group show “Je n’attendrai pas que l’on me pardonne” at the A Space For Photography gallery, Arles, while her graphic work received the 100 Beste Plakate accolade in 2019.
Everywhere: Telling by stagingBy investigating the cultures surrounding human relationships with animals, the photographer seems to be portraying a subconscious desire. After the series Domesticate, based on an owl bar in Tokyo, Crickets dives once again into a seemingly “alien” culture. While fulfilling a documentary role, the pictures weave the viewer into a deeper complex of significations. The abstraction produced by the very staged and graphical character does not expose the sujet, but rather transforms it into a key-image. Kubski’s images often work as allegories, telling us something about the real in the manner of a tarot card.
