Here: Biennale BenchThe lightweight, almost transparent outdoor seating Biennale Bench was created by the industrial designer Michel Charlot on commission for the exhibition ‘Social Seating’, curated by Jasper Morrison, in 2019 at the first edition of the Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale in Finland. The bench proved highly successful and entered a further stage of development, supported by Pro Helvetia, towards serial production for the market, in partnership with the Swiss manufacturer of urban furniture Burri.
There: Organic & transparentReduced to the minimum, the bench is composed of two elements: the seat and the foot. They can be assembled in various ways, basically with no limitations in length. The ease of assembly and durability of the galvanised steel components make the Biennale Bench a modern and adaptable contribution to the world of outdoor and urban furnishing. The almost complete transparency achieved by the use of the galvanised grid makes it visually far more discreet than its traditional counterparts. This allows the bench, a swirling organic silhouette, to blend into any landscape.
Everywhere: Implenting concepts into realityThe designer gained experience working for Jasper Morrison Ltd., creating the adaptable exhibition design for the world touring show Jasper Morrison: My Collection in 2010. Since 2011 Charlot has had his own practice, working for companies such as Vitra, creating products such as the organiser O-Tidy, and Kettal. In 2013, his lamp U-turn, the first product designed with Belux, was honoured with the Swiss Design Award and the Design Preis Schweiz, “as an excellent example both of intelligent conceptual thinking in the field of product design and of effective technical implementation.”
