Here: Ripley → The variable font Ripley was developed by typographer David Massara for his BA in graphic design at ECAL, Lausanne. The main feature of this new variable font is its design, which is geared towards optimised legibility on screen, with the variability adjusting dynamically to the ambient light.

There: Toolbox → Based on Times NR Seven, previously used by Oxford Journals and acknowledged for its high legibility as small text, Ripley is the result of a combination of state-of-the-art typographic approaches to screen legibility. Offering a range of more than eight variables, the typeface can be understood as a highly versatile toolbox that fits all kinds of graphical contexts, both formal and informal. Responding to the light situation, the OpenType Variable Fonts technology as Massara used it for Ripley here shows its full potential.
Everywhere: Variable light → David Massara works as a freelance type designer at Newglyph, having gained his first professional experience at the studio ARD. With his research, which connects a web technology to the quality of a physical dimension — the light situation of the reader — Massara makes a pioneering step and thus opens up a new dimension for screen font design.
