Here: Yèsè → Since moving to Shanghai, Agius has immersed herself in the nightlife of the bustling metropolis. This is where she undertook a portrait series of the people who make those nights: the women DJs. Yèsè means Nightlight, and this is what Agius stages and captures while meeting the beat makers of contemporary China. A first chapter of analogue prints entitled SZSZSZSZ was shown in 2018 at the art space 1.1 in Basel.
Mathilde Agius
Photography
There: Surreal wit → Mathilde Agius has developed an uncompromising style as a fashion photographer, working for Vogue Netherlands, and with Art Review, AnOther Magazine, Fantastic Man, The Gentlewoman, Das Magazin, Pin-Up Magazine, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin and the Centre Culturel Suisse.
Everywhere: Staying in the nigtlight → The visual essay Mathilde Agius is composing gives an insight into a world that is rapidly changing and inventing its codes and subjectivities via friendships and fragmented memories. Changing the pace, moving from short-term contracts to a long-term inquiry, Agius’s images show a more nuanced range of emotions and a touching closeness to her sujets, without losing the wit that is the strength of her aesthetic.
