Here: PhotobooksThe photographer and graphic designer Nicolas Polli presents a selection of published photobooks covering a range of experiments, from which emerges a cohesive design process starting in each case from a commission for a concrete work. The development of production techniques, the alteration of the printing process and the graphic cleanliness are the basis of his design process. For most of his clients, Nicolas prefers to become involved in the artistic process, using the book as an amplifier of the artist’s work. In his view, the graphic work should become invisible and the designer’s task is to materialise the artist’s vision.
There: A SelectionThe selection comprises mostly artist monographies, among which The Iceberg, by Giorgio Di Noto, published in 2017 by Edition Patrick Frey; and Living in a Painting, by Maya Rochat, published in 2019 by Ciao Press. Polli’s own book, Ferox the Forgotten Archives 1976–2010, published in 2018 by Skinnerboox/Ciao Press, received the Prix Photoforum, Biel and the Aperture First Book award, NYC in 2018.
The set is completed with The Book of Images, published in 2019 by Images Vevey and Koenig Books. Containing nearly 1,000 images by some 300 different artists, the book is an anthology showing everything that has been done during Images Vevey in the last 10 years, thus reflecting the evolution of contemporary photography.
Everywhere: Ciao pressIn 2012, while studying Visual Communication at SUPSI, Nicolas founded YET Magazine Along with Salvatore Vitale. After 11 issues, YET is an established magazine showcasing Swiss photographers in relation to international photographers, focussing on different topics related to contemporary photography. The magazine won a Swiss Design Award 2018 in the Mediation category. In 2018, after working on books for several publishing houses, Nicolas decided to found his own: CIAO PRESS.
